Mallorca training camps — the 19 kilometres before the first climb

By The MallorcaVelo Team · Published Aug 7, 2026

Book the town, not the hotel.

Every camp in this survey sells the same fortnight of Mallorcan spring, and the thing that actually differs between them is a number none of them prints: how far you ride before the first climb starts. Across the 7 towns these 19 camps use, that runs from a climb that begins in the town itself — Port d'Andratx — to 19.1 km at Ca'n Picafort. You ride it out and back, every riding day, for a week.

8 of the 19 put nothing to climb inside 10 kilometres of the door. That is not a scandal and it is not an accident: it is where the beds are. But it is the single biggest difference between two camps that read identically on a brochure, and it is decided the day you pick one.

The four picks

Each rule below is published before its answer, runs on the road measurement or on the operator’s own sentence, and cannot see a price, a partner or a commission — because nothing here is given one. A reader who disagrees with a rule can read the table underneath and get a different camp.

Four questions, four camps

If this is your questionThe campThe rule that chose it
I want the climbing to start at the doorThomson Bike Tours — Mallorca Cycling Campthe most published climb-sides inside 10 km of any town the camp uses
I came for base miles, and the flat is the point808project — 120 Service Course Mallorcaof the camps whose town has nothing inside 10 km, the one that reaches the most published climb-sides inside 30 km
I want to know what a day is before I payBalance Point Racing — Mallorca Camp 2027the widest span between its slowest and fastest published group, among camps that publish a daily distance for at least two
February is the only week I can takeStuart Hall Cycling — Spring Cycling Camp 2027of the camps that run in February, the one whose town is closest to a published climb-side foot

The door pick has a wrinkle worth the sentence. Thomson Bike Tours wins it on its second hotel, not its first: the camp moves mid-trip, and the leg based at Port d'Andratx is the best-placed week in the entire field — 6 published climb-sides inside 10 km, more than anywhere else these camps go, with the nearest foot at the town itself. The Alcúdia half of the same trip has 3.

The volume pick is a recommendation, not a consolation. If the plan is zone 2 and a big weekly total, Ca'n Picafort is the right answer and its 19.1 km of approach is the warm-up rather than the tax. That is the case RennRad makes for the same coast in 2019, and the measurement agrees with it.

Three things in that table are worth reading twice.

Port d'Alcúdia misses the bar by 122 metres. Its nearest published climb-side foot is 10,122 m. The 10-kilometre line is ours and it is stated so a reader can move it; this is the town that shows why the line has to be published rather than asserted.

The same climb is the nearest one to 5 of the 7 towns. Everything on the Badia d’Alcúdia reaches the coll de la Creueta first, because that is the road onto the Formentor peninsula — so the “nearest climbing” of 18 of the 19 camps is the same piece of tarmac, at different distances.

On the marquee test the field does not separate at all. Every one of these towns reaches 3–4 of the island’s ten hardest climb-sides inside 50 km, ranked by the hardest-climbs guide. If the famous roads are the reason for the trip, every camp here can reach them and the choice turns on something else.

How we got this Each town is ordered twice over the same measurement: by road distance to the nearest published climb-side foot, and by how many published climb-sides lie inside 30 km. No weighting and no score — two orderings of one set, shown side by side.Computed from the 7 towns the surveyed camps base themselves in.Computed 6 August 2026.

Only 4 of the 19 publish a daily distance at all. The rest sell a ride group by name — an Epic Ride, two Stärkeklassen, “six or more ride groups daily” — and leave the kilometres to be discovered on the first morning. Where the number does exist the field’s spread is enormous: 45 km to 161 km — the slowest group at Balance Point Racing against the fastest at Stuart Hall Cycling. Both are called a day at a training camp on Mallorca.

Know before you book

8 of the 19 ride an approach before every climb. 808project, manusports / ACTIVE Mallorca, Huerzeler Bicycle Holidays, BaseCamp, SunVelo, Ride Switzerland, Maxpulse all base in a town with nothing inside 10 km. On the shortest of them that is 10.1 km each way before the first climb begins; on the longest, 19.1 km. Budget it into the day rather than discovering it — and note what this page does not measure: how much the approach itself climbs. These are road distances between a town and the foot of a climb, not a claim that the road between them is level.

2 of the 19 have announced a month and not a date. Sportive Breaks (February 2027) and Huerzeler Bicycle Holidays (March 2027) have named a month and no day. If flights are the constraint, those are the two to ask first.

6 operators’ live pages still sell a season that has finished. The fullest of them is speed-ville‘s, which publishes a base, three ride groups graded by watts per kilo, and five dated weeks — every one of them in 2026. They are in this page’s refused list rather than its table for that reason alone, and the check that put them there re-runs on every build: the day one of them posts a 2027 date it becomes a member of the survey. That is not hypothetical — one operator refused on this test in the last survey is in the table above in this one, because it dated its week.

Nothing in this field runs outside January–November. Every window the 19 camps have announced — 37 of them, one of which is a whole 21-night-plus season rather than a week — falls inside 7 months:

Where the field's announced weeks fall, against what the month is like

April1619.8 °C4.8pick
May823.7 °C3.8pick
October423.9 °C6.1workable
November119.0 °C6.1specialist

5 months of the year carry no camp in this survey at all, and one of them is not obviously worse riding: September sits in the same tier as February on the climate record this site publishes — warmer, sunnier, and with fewer rain days, though more rain by volume when it comes. Why the field is shaped this way is not something this page can measure, so it does not guess; what it can tell you is that if the spring weeks are full or expensive, the September page has the numbers to judge the alternative on.

What riders say

The community layer here is 3 publishers, 2 of them German-language, and the most useful of them is not selling a camp.

Who says what about where a camp should be

PublisherDatedKindIn their wordsWhat it is evidence of
Cycle Fiestaundatedadvice«significantly further away from the best cycling routes»The one English-language piece that ranks these towns against each other says of Ca’n Picafort in words what the road distance says in metres, and advises staying “as close to Alcudia as possible, rather than towards Can Picafort”.
ciclista.net — Carolyn Ott-Friesl2024-05-14rode it«Von Alcúdia aus muss man dafür keine Monstertouren machen, um viele bekannte Highlights abzufahren. Cap Formentor, Sa Calobra, Orient – alles sehr gut erreichbar.»A first-person week based in Alcúdia, and the only account read that puts a total on it: 450 kilometres and just under 4,000 metres of climbing. The same piece is candid about what the flat costs — the long straight roads inland are called «ziemlich langweilig».
RennRad — Johann Fährmann2019-10-30advice«Der Nordwesten und die Nordostküste zwischen Port de Pollenca, Port d’Alcuida und Can Picafort sind besonders beliebt.»A German cycling magazine naming the same stretch of coast the survey found the camps on — the consensus this page is measuring, stated by the trade rather than inferred from it.

Cycle Fiesta makes this page’s finding in words. Ranking the northern towns, it calls Ca'n Picafort «significantly further away from the best cycling routes» and tells a reader to stay “as close to Alcudia as possible”. The road distance says 19.1 km against 8.5 km — the same conclusion, with a number under it. What the same measurement then adds is the half that piece does not have: Ca'n Picafort reaches 15 climb-sides inside 30 km and Alcúdia reaches 9.

One account puts a total on a week. Carolyn Ott-Friesl, writing on ciclista.net in 2024, rode out of Alcúdia and finished on 450 km and just under 4,000 m. Set that beside what the operators sell — Sa Calobra Cycling Club plans 500–550 km for seven nights, Balance Point Racing says its riders typically finish 900–1,200 km over ten days — and the same piece is candid about the cost of the flat: the long straight roads inland are, in her words, «ziemlich langweilig».

Source Cycle Fiesta, ciclista.net, RennRad · checked 4 September 2026Two more pieces are named rather than dropped: bookyabike and bike-stefan.de. Neither currently serves a page this guide could quote, and nothing is claimed from either.

The one claim this page can test

Two operators in the field make a claim about their location specific enough to check. Neither is wrong about the word they used; both are answering one of the two questions and not the other.

A claim, and the measurement beside it

WhoThe claimFromTo the nearest climb foot
Sportive Breaks«Stay with us at a 4-star hotel in Alcudia where the best riding is in Mallorca.»Alcúdia8.5 km — coll de la Creueta
speed-ville«sehr schnelle Wege ins Tramuntanagebirge»Port d'Alcúdia10.1 km — coll de la Creueta

Sportive Breaks says its hotel is where «Stay with us at a 4-star hotel in Alcudia where the best riding is in Mallorca.». From Alcúdia the first climb foot is 8.5 km away and 9 climb-sides sit inside 30 km — which is a good base and is not the closest one in its own field: Port d'Andratx, used by a camp in this same table, is 8.5 km nearer to a climb foot. Read as a claim about the island, it is marketing. Read as a claim about a week of riding within reach, the numbers back it.

Booking the rest of it

Every camp here sells the beds and the guiding and almost none of them sells the flight, the transfer or the bike.

The transfer is the first cost after the flight. The quickest drive from the terminal to these towns runs 42.2 km to 64.0 km — Port d'Andratx to Port de Pollença — and a transfer booked before you land is the difference between riding the next morning and riding the one after. The arrival guide measures the whole set.

If the camp does not include a bike, the cassette is the decision and not the frame: compare hire fleets and their gearing and ask for the largest sprocket in the building. The bike-hire guide has what each operator publishes.

If you want the town without the camp, the same measurement runs underneath every base on the site — Port de Pollença, Alcúdia and

Platja de Muro

are the three the field uses most. The base guide ranks all of them, and the trip planner will build the week from whichever one you pick.

How this was made

The survey’s membership rule, applied rather than described: An operator is in this survey if it sells a fixed-base road-cycling camp on Mallorca and publishes, on a page readable without an account, both where it is based and at least one date. Multi-sport camps are tagged, not excluded. No price is stored: charter R3 puts a moving third-party number behind the operator’s own link.

Every distance is a road distance over this site’s own ridable graph, and the two orderings on this page are the base cluster’s published tests, read from the base guide rather than re-cut here. The join is checked against that guide’s own figures for all 18 towns with a base page — 0 disagreements, and a single one stops this page. Everything an operator says about itself is a quotation proved against its own page on 2026-09-04. The methodology page has the rest.

How we got this For every town with a base page, the nearest climb-side foot, the count inside the spin radius and the count of the ten hardest inside 50 km are recomputed from the base measurements and compared to the figures the base guide derives through the base cluster. Any disagreement is caught at once.Computed from the base guide’s own per-town figures and an independent rebuild of them from the raw measurement.Computed 6 August 2026.
