Mallorca 312 race weekend: expo, transfers and where to be

One rule decides the shape of a Mallorca 312 weekend, and it is not a rule about riding. The bib number must be collected in person, at the expo in Platja de Muro, on the Thursday or the Friday before the race. Nobody can collect it for you. That single sentence fixes your flights, your transfer, your hotel and the day you stop training.

Work backwards from it and the weekend plans itself. A Friday-evening arrival is possible on paper — the expo is open until 21:00 — and it is the single worst way to ride this event: it puts a flight delay between you and your start. A Thursday arrival gives you the whole of Friday as slack, a day to rebuild and check the bike, and a Friday-morning collection with no queue.

Palma airport to Platja de Muro

The start line is at the far end of the island from the airport, on the bay of Alcúdia. The organiser’s own figure is 40 minutes by car. Public transport is possible and needs checking against the calendar, because the line that actually reaches Platja de Muro is a summer service and race weekend sits in late April.

For a rider arriving with a bike bag, a wheel bag and a kit bag, the honest answer is usually a car. It also solves the Thursday-to-Sunday problem that the bus does not: the expo, the hotel and the start are spread across Platja de Muro and Port d’Alcúdia, and you will move between them more than once. If you are hiring one, compare the Palma airport desks before you land — the race fills the north of the island, and the title sponsor advertises a discount code on the event’s own services page.

If nobody in your group is driving, the remaining pre-bookable option is a private transfer with the bike box declared at booking, so the vehicle that turns up is one it fits in. A fixed-price airport transfer to Platja de Muro costs what it said when you booked it — a taxi-rank negotiation with a bike box at midnight does not.

Where to sleep, and why it is not a free choice

Two fixed points sit within a couple of kilometres of each other: the expo on Avenida s’Albufera and the start arch, both in Platja de Muro. A hotel between them turns Saturday morning into a ten-minute spin to the start; a hotel in Palma turns it into a 06:00 drive with a bike in the back and nowhere to park.

Book refundable if you can. On the last four editions the entry itself sold out in minutes or seconds, and the weekend is worth holding a room for before you know whether you have a place — a cancellable room in Platja de Muro is the cheapest insurance in the whole trip.

If the table points you at hiring: reserve early — race week concentrates demand on every fleet on the island — and specify the cassette in writing when you book the road bike. The steepest kilometre of the route is 7.5%; the wrong sprockets are the avoidable mistake.

Two things a rider needs are not machine-readable and are therefore not stated here as fact: the organiser's intermediate cut-off times, published only inside an annual course-guide image, and the bike-hire partner's own terms — arrivocycling.com returned HTTP 403 to our fetch on 2026-08-05. Airline bike-carriage fees are excluded on the same principle: the airline sites defeat automated reading, and a stale baggage fee is worse than no fee at all. Where a source defeats automated reading we say so and link it, rather than quoting a number from memory that may be two price rises out of date.

You assemble in the dark. Civil dawn on race morning 2027 is 06:28 and the gun is at 06:30, so getting to the start and riding the first kilometres out of Platja de Muro both happen before sunrise at 06:55. A rear light is not optional equipment for a 20:40 cut-off that falls after sunset either — see the pacing page for the full daylight arithmetic.

If it goes wrong

Accompanying vehicles are strictly forbidden, and the penalty is disqualification plus a ban from future editions. Mechanical assistance is provided on the course but riders pay for any parts. Riders who abandon inside the cut-offs are recovered by a bus and a support car. The organiser also publishes a race-day medical line alongside 112: +34 621 396 853.

The practical version: inside the cut-offs you will be picked up. Outside them, past the point where the “End of Race” vehicle has gone by, you are a private individual on a public road in the Tramuntana with a phone and whatever you are carrying. That is the argument for a jacket and a charged phone in the back pocket rather than in the hotel.

If the thing that goes wrong is the flight rather than the ride: a cancellation or a long delay on an EU departure can carry fixed compensation under EU Regulation 261/2004, separate from any refund or rebooking. You can claim it from the airline yourself for free, or hand it to a flight-compensation claims service for a share of the payout — worth knowing before you accept a rebooking that writes off the Thursday expo appointment.

The other paperwork worth a look before Thursday is insurance. Read the exclusions on your travel policy before race week — organised sporting events are a common one — and if yours excludes them, specialist travel cover exists for exactly that gap. Whether your existing policy already covers you is in its wording, not here.

The weekend, condensed

Land Thursday if the flights allow it, Friday morning at the latest. The expo is the appointment, not the race.
Collect the bib yourself on Thursday or Friday, 09:00–21:00, Avenida s’Albufera 33. Nobody else can.
Stay in Platja de Muro if you can — the expo and the start arch are both there.
Hire the car, not the bus, unless you are travelling light and have checked that the A32 is running in April.
Specify the cassette when you book a hire bike; the route’s steepest kilometre is 7.5%.

One more Sunday problem: if the flight home leaves in the evening and checkout comes in the morning, the day in between is better spent in Palma than in a hotel lobby next to a bike box. Left-luggage around Palma takes the box and the bags for the afternoon.
