The six parts of Mallorca

The longest stretch of ridable road on this island that never offers you a junction runs 18.3 km through the Serra de Tramuntana. For 18 km there is no decision to make and no way to shorten the day. That is not a fact about how steep the mountains are, and no guide to this island publishes it, because every guide cuts Mallorca by terrain and stops. Cut the same island by the shape of its road network instead and the six parts sort differently — and two of them turn out to have no extreme at all.

These six are a partition, not a shortlist: every one of the island's 5,082 km of riding road belongs to exactly one of them, so leaving out the smallest would not make a tidier section, it would make an island with a hole in it. Two of the six — Raiguer and Llevant — hold neither end of any of the four orders. Not the most committed and not the least, not the busiest with junctions and not the quietest. That is the whole reason they are absent from the guides: there is no superlative to write a headline out of. It is also a real property, and for a rider who wants a week with nothing extreme about it in any direction, it is the answer rather than the leftovers.

What the market says about these six

Ten publishers make claims about the parts of this island — quiet lanes, no traffic, circular rides from the villages. Each of those is tested against the measurement, one by one, in the regions guide. Five of the six comarques are named by somebody; the verdicts are not all the same.

What a comarca actually is

Before any of the above means anything: a comarca of Mallorca is not a layer of government. There is no comarcal council and no comarcal boundary in law. The six-part division measured here is a geographer's — Ferran Dídac Lluch i Dubon's, published in 1994 — and its own reference literature says plainly that it carries no official rank. It is built out of whole municipalities, which is what makes it stable enough to measure a road network against, and it was drawn to describe relief and settlement rather than traffic. So a road that feels like the Raiguer can belong to the Pla, and the line is not wrong when it does.
