Bases

Where to stay, measured

Where you sleep decides which climbs you get, and the gap is not small. 40 of this island's published climb-sides start within 30 km of Valldemossa by road; 3 start within 30 km of Colònia de Sant Jordi. That is 13.3 times the choice for the same week off work, and no guide to this island tells you so. These are the 18 towns you can actually book a bed in, ranked on what a bike reaches from each.

How we got this Dijkstra over the same OpenStreetMap road graph the routes engine uses — no motorway, because a bicycle may not ride a Mallorcan autopista; cycleways in; ways tagged access=private, no, customers or permit dropped before routing. It is the approach ride to where the gradient starts, not a route recommendation: the shortest path between two points is rarely the road you would choose. Distances are to the climb’s foot as the climb measurements record it.Computed from the shortest ridable road distance from each town’s OpenStreetMap place node to the foot of every one of the 122 measured climb-sides, joined to the 75 this site publishes.Computed 6 August 2026.

There is a pattern underneath the table, and it is the whole difficulty of choosing a base here: the beds are on the coast and the climbing is in the middle. Every town on the plain that sits closest to the mountains — Inca, Sineu, Campos — failed the first rule below, because the island licenses almost no beds in them. The island's hotel industry is a coastal one, so the practical question is not which town is nearest the Tramuntana but which stretch of coast the Tramuntana comes down to meet.

What counts as a base

32 towns were measured and 18 carry a page. Three rules decide it, they are applied in this order, and every town that failed one is printed below with the number that failed it.

  1. Somewhere to stay. At least 10 establishments licensed to trade within 2 km, or at least 1,000 registered bed places. Both figures come from the Consell de Mallorca's island accommodation register, read 7 August 2026: 1,854 establishments and 309,008 bed places across Mallorca, republished daily. A town is credited with an establishment when the register files it under that town and puts it inside the circle — the count alone would give Cala Bona its neighbour's hotels 1.2 km away, and the register's own locality alone would give Campos farmhouses spread across the municipality. There are two limbs because a count of doors cannot see a big hotel: es Camp de Mar is eight establishments and 3,108 beds. 11 towns failed here.
  2. Something to ride. At least one published climb-side whose foot is inside 30 km by road. No town on this island failed that, which is worth knowing on its own: Mallorca is small enough that everywhere has a climb.
  3. One page per riding area. Where two qualifying towns sit within 12 km of each other by road and 85% or more of the climbs within reach of one are also within reach of the other, the page goes to the town with more places to stay and it names the other. Cala Bona and Cala Millor are 1.2 km apart and reach an identical set of climbs; two pages about that would be one page written twice. Three towns were folded in this way.

One departure from the rules

Rule 3 hands a merged pair to whichever town has more places to stay. That is the right tie-break almost everywhere and the wrong one once:

  • Platja de Muro keeps the page instead of Ca'n Picafort. The Mallorca 312 starts and finishes at Platja de Muro, and this site publishes eight pages about that race in two languages. A base page the cluster next door cannot link to is the wrong page.

The towns without a page

The measurement covered 32 towns. These 14 did not get a page, and this is why — the same numbers the rules were applied to, so the judgement can be checked rather than taken.

TownPlaces to stayClimbs within 30 kmWhy it has no page
Santa Ponça2630The same riding as Palmanova, 6 km away — 91% of the climbs in common. Palmanova has more places to stay (45 against 26), so it carries the page. Rule 3.
Cala Bona1810The same riding as Cala Millor, 1 km away — 91% of the climbs in common. Cala Millor has more places to stay (56 against 18), so it carries the page. Rule 3.

What the guides say

Two of the leading guides to this question were read on 6 August 2026. Both name bases. Neither publishes a single measured comparison between them — no road distance to a climb, no count within a radius, no transfer:

  • Cycle Fiesta puts Port de Pollença, Alcúdia, Port de Sóller, Selva, Alaró and Banyalbufar forward as bases, and names Magaluf, Palmanova, s’Arenal, Can Pastilla and Can Picafort among the places not to stay — on character, traffic and scenery. The Best and Worst Bases in Mallorca for a Cycling Holiday, read 6 August 2026.
  • Epic Road Rides puts Port de Pollença, Port d’Alcúdia, Sóller, Campanet and Palma forward as bases, without quantifying what any of them puts within reach of a bicycle. Cycling Mallorca — your ultimate guide, read 6 August 2026.

They are ranking character, traffic and scenery, and a script measures none of those — a week in Palmanova is not a week in Port de Pollença whatever the road distances say. But the disagreement is worth printing rather than smoothing over: on road access to climbs, the towns one of those guides lists as places not to stay come out well ahead of the town both of them recommend. Palmanova reaches 33 published climb-sides inside 30 km; Port de Pollença reaches 9. Both numbers are in the table above, and either can be re-derived from the same script.

About the drive from the airport

Every base here is reached through one airport, so the transfer column is the same journey measured the same way for all of them: the length of the quickest driving route from the terminals at Aeroport de Palma - Son Sant Joan. It is a distance and not a journey time — nothing here models the Ma-19 in August. Against an independent router run over its own copy of the same map, 32 of these figures agree to a median of 3.7% and 23 of them fall inside 5%. One does not, and it is Palma: our driving graph ignores one-way streets, which costs nothing when a transfer ends at a resort on a bay and a good deal when it ends inside a one-way old town.

How we got this a second road graph, built for this measurement alone: motorway and its slip roads included, cycleways excluded, the bicycle access filter off — because a rider arrives by taxi or hire car and the shortest ridable path is not that journey. Edges are weighted by the posted maxspeed where OpenStreetMap has one and by road class where it does not, so the route is the one a driver takes rather than the shortest line. It is a distance, not a journey time: nothing here models traffic.Computed from the length of the quickest driving route from the terminal buildings at Palma airport to each town’s OpenStreetMap place node.Computed 6 August 2026.

Booking a bed in any of them

Each town has its own page with the climbs that start from it, and an accommodation search for that town rather than for the island. The ranking above cannot see any of that: it is built from road distances and height gained.

Half of these bases put the good riding beyond a comfortable spin, so a car changes what a week can hold — compare Mallorca car hire.
