Palma airport to your hotel, with a bike — book the transfer

Book the transfer.

Not because it is the nicest answer — because on this island it is the only one that does not depend on somebody else’s judgement on the day. The island’s own bus regulation names a bicycle carried in a box or a bag as special luggage, and puts its admission in the hands of the driver. The railway that does carry a bicycle, free and by right, runs to three towns on the plain, and of the eighteen base towns this site measures, exactly one sits on it: Palma itself. The bike box comes off belt 17 at the far end of arrivals, and from there it is a road, a boot and about 40 min of driving to the bay of Pollença.

What the first day costs you

Everything below is the same measurement: the length of the quickest driving route from the passenger terminal at Son Sant Joan to the town, over a road graph weighted by speed. It is a road measurement and carries no traffic and no queue at the rank — read the time as a floor, and the distance as exact.

The spread is the finding. The furthest base town on this site, Cala Rajada, is 77.1 km from the terminal; s'Arenal de Llucmajor is 8.7 km. That is 8.9× the road, for two towns on the same island, and it is a decision most riders make without ever seeing the number. The median base sits at 51.7 km — call it three quarters of an hour each way, twice, and the transfer has eaten a morning’s riding out of a week.

Two towns are over three quarters of an hour before traffic: Cala Rajada and Cala Millor. Both are on the east coast, both are excellent places to ride from, and both are a real argument for flying into an afternoon rather than an evening — the transfer is the part of the journey that does not compress.

The bus: your bike box is the driver’s decision

The rules that govern the island’s interurban buses were approved by the Consorci de Transports de Mallorca and published in the Balearic official gazette — Butlletí Oficial de les Illes Balears, núm. 58 of 7 May 2026, page 23963 — and have been in force since 7 June 2026. They are worth reading in the original, because they are unusually direct about the exact object you are holding.

Section 5.5 a lists what counts as equipatge especial, and it names bikes in boxes by name:

And section 5.5 b says who decides whether special luggage travels:

That is the whole answer for a boxed bike, and it is not a no — it is an ask on the day. The size limits make the reason plain: the one item of luggage you may bring in addition to hand luggage may not exceed 100 × 60 × 30 cm (5.4 e), and hand luggage 55 × 35 × 25 cm (5.2 b). The regulation is explicit that special luggage is what «excedeix les mesures definides en aquesta norma» — which is why it lists a boxed bike there and not in the row above. The box is not luggage with a right to travel; it is a thing the driver may accommodate.

There is an airport bus that goes to the cycling coast, and what it runs on matters more than when it leaves. Line A32 works Can Picafort to the airport in 20 stops, calling at Platja de Muro, Port d'Alcúdia, Alcúdia, Sa Pobla, Inca, and the operator’s fleet note for it reads «Bus de piso semibajo» — a low-floor bus, which is the one vehicle class the regulation’s own table treats differently from a coach with a luggage hold. It is a seasonal line, and the season is the thing to check rather than the timetable: in 2026 it ran every day from 27 March 2026 to 31 October 2026. A trip in early March lands outside that; a trip in April does not.

Once the bike is out of the box and assembled, the table changes and it is worth knowing: Cada persona pot transportar una única bicicleta (5.4 e), and what happens next depends entirely on the vehicle.

The train carries a bicycle by right — and it does not go where you are staying

The other operator’s regulation reads like a different country’s. On the Serveis Ferroviaris de Mallorca network a bicycle is not luggage at all — «Les bicicletes no es consideren en cap cas equipatge de mà.» (l)) — it is a thing that travels, free, in a stated quantity:

Which trains, per n) I: «S’admet el passatge amb bicicleta únicament en aquells trens habilitats a aquest efecte, i assenyalats en els horaris oficials.» — and then the clause that matters to anybody riding at a weekend: «Llevat dels serveis especials, els caps de setmana i festius s’admeten bicicletes en tots els trens.»

So why is it not the answer? Because of where the rails go. The network has 24 train stations; 12 of them are more than 20.0 km from the terminal, which is to say outside greater Palma. The three lines end at Inca (T1/T2/T3), Sa Pobla (T2), Manacor (T3) — all three on the plain, and none of them a town this site publishes as a base. Of the 18 base towns, exactly one — Palma — has a station within 1.5 km of it.

Sóller is the near miss worth naming: it has a railway station, and it is on the other railway — the narrow-gauge line over the Tramuntana, 6 stations, a separate operator with its own rules. Arriving on it is a day out, not a transfer.

What the train is genuinely good for is the middle of the week, and this is the number that makes the case: from Inca, the end of the T1/T2/T3 line and 33.5 km from the airport by road, the nearest foot of a climb gaining 300 m or more is 6.7 km away — the Coll de sa Batalla from Caimari, the road to Lluc. A rider staying in Palma who wants a Serra day without a 40 km approach through the suburbs has a bike-carrying train that starts it for them.

Know before you ride

Belt 17, and the walk to the rank

Bikes are special baggage at this airport and they do not come to the ordinary carousel. The airport information site palmaairport.info states it plainly — “At Palma Airport you will usually find special baggage on reclaim belt 17.” — and sets the threshold at “Any items larger than 1.2 m or weighing more than 50 kg are considered special baggage.”. Belt 17 is at the far end of the hall, which is a walk with two boxes and a trolley, and it is the reason the first fifteen minutes of a Mallorca trip take longer than anybody plans for.

Four boxes, first come, first served

The regulation gives the driver discretion and does not print a number. A rider-facing guide does: Ride Harder, 2026-05-04, reports that “Only 4 bike boxes are allowed per bus, and the queue isn't always well organised — it's first come, first served”. That figure is not in the gazette and we have found no official statement of it — but it is the practical shape of 5.5 b, and it is consistent with it. Treat it as what to expect at the stop rather than as a rule you can hold anybody to.

The box has to live somewhere for a week

Two boxes in a hotel room is a real problem and hotels vary wildly in whether they will store them. Ask before you book — and if the answer is no, the boxes can stay at the airport rather than in the room: left-luggage near the terminal is priced per item per day and is the cheapest fix for a problem that otherwise costs you the wardrobe.

The flight home is the harder half

Everything above runs in reverse with one difference: on the way out you have all day, and on the way home you have a check-in time. A transfer booked to a departure time is the same money as one booked to an arrival time, and it is the leg where a missed bus is not an inconvenience.

If you are riding to the hotel anyway

Some riders build the bike at the airport and ride out. That is a legitimate plan for the near towns — s'Arenal de Llucmajor is 8.7 km of road — and a poor one for the far ones, and the table above is the honest guide to which is which. The luggage is the constraint, not the legs.

The account earns its place because it cross-checks a regulation: Ride Harder (2026-05-04) puts a number on the bus problem that the gazette leaves as discretion, and independently confirms the belt that a second, unrelated airport-information page states. Two sources, one operational claim each, agreeing where they overlap.

The practical block

Book the transfer, and book it to the door. It is the only option in this guide whose outcome does not depend on a driver’s judgement, a season, or a rail line that ends on the plain — book an airport transfer with the bikes declared and give the number of boxes when you book, not on the kerb. The distance to give them is in the table above: 64.0 km to Port de Pollença, 59.0 km to Port d'Alcúdia, 30.5 km to Sóller.

Hire a car if the week has a second plan in it. A car is the answer when you want to start rides somewhere other than the hotel — the Serra from the north one day and the east coast the next — and it makes the 77.1 km towns viable that the transfer makes expensive. Compare hire cars at the terminal and check the boot dimensions against a bike box before you choose the small one.

And if the bike is not coming at all, the arithmetic changes completely.
