Palma airport bike transfer: getting to your hotel

Book a transfer from the airport to your hotel, and tell the company about the bike boxes when you book.

On this island it is the only way to your base that does not depend on somebody else’s decision on the day. The island’s bus regulation lists a bicycle carried in a box or a bag as special luggage, and leaves it to the driver whether it goes on board. The railway carries a bicycle free and by right, but it runs to three towns on the plain, and of the eighteen base towns in this guide, exactly one is on it: Palma itself. The bike box comes off belt 17 at the far end of arrivals. From there you need a car boot and about 40 min of driving to reach the bay of Pollença.

Transfer distance and time to every base town

The table gives the quickest driving route from the passenger terminal at Son Sant Joan to each town. The times assume no traffic and no queue at the taxi rank, so treat them as the least the drive will take. The distances are exact.

Where you stay changes the transfer a great deal. The furthest base town, Cala Rajada, is 77.1 km from the terminal; the nearest, s'Arenal de Llucmajor, is 8.7 km. The longer drive is 8.9× the distance, and most riders book a town without ever seeing that number. The median base is 51.7 km away, about three quarters of an hour each way. Do that on the way in and again on the way home, and the transfers have taken a morning’s riding out of your week.

Two towns are more than three quarters of an hour away even with no traffic: Cala Rajada and Cala Millor. Both are on the east coast and both are excellent places to ride from. If you are staying in either, choose a flight that lands in the afternoon rather than the evening, because nothing will shorten the drive.

The bus: your bike box is the driver’s decision

The rules that govern the island’s interurban buses were approved by the Consorci de Transports de Mallorca and published in the Balearic official gazette — Butlletí Oficial de les Illes Balears, núm. 58 of 7 May 2026, page 23963 — and have been in force since 7 June 2026. They deal with bike boxes directly.

Section 5.5 a lists what counts as equipatge especial, and it names bikes in boxes by name:

And section 5.5 b says who decides whether special luggage travels:

So a boxed bike is not refused outright: you ask on the day, and the driver decides. The size limits explain why. The one item of luggage you may bring in addition to hand luggage may not exceed 100 × 60 × 30 cm (5.4 e), and hand luggage 55 × 35 × 25 cm (5.2 b). The regulation defines special luggage as whatever «excedeix les mesures definides en aquesta norma», which is why a boxed bike is on that list. It is too big to count as ordinary luggage, so it has no right to travel and goes on only if the driver makes room for it.

One airport bus goes to the cycling towns on the north coast, and the type of bus matters more than the timetable. Line A32 runs from Can Picafort to the airport in 20 stops, calling at Platja de Muro, Port d'Alcúdia, Alcúdia, Sa Pobla, Inca. The operator lists its vehicle as «Bus de piso semibajo», a low-floor bus, and the regulation’s table treats that class differently from a coach with a luggage hold. It is a seasonal line, so check the season before the timetable: in 2026 it ran every day from 27 March 2026 to 31 October 2026. A trip in early March falls outside that; a trip in April does not.

The train carries bikes free, but only Palma is on the line

The train operator’s rules are far more generous. On the Serveis Ferroviaris de Mallorca network a bicycle does not count as luggage at all — «Les bicicletes no es consideren en cap cas equipatge de mà.» (l)) — and it travels free, up to a set number per train:

Which trains take bikes is set out in n) I: «S’admet el passatge amb bicicleta únicament en aquells trens habilitats a aquest efecte, i assenyalats en els horaris oficials.». If you are travelling at a weekend, this clause matters: «Llevat dels serveis especials, els caps de setmana i festius s’admeten bicicletes en tots els trens.»

The problem is where the lines go. The network has 24 train stations, and 12 of them are more than 20.0 km from the terminal, outside greater Palma. The three lines end at Inca (T1/T2/T3), Sa Pobla (T2), Manacor (T3), all three on the plain, and none of them is one of the base towns in the table above. Of the 18 base towns, only Palma has a station within 1.5 km of it.

Sóller has a railway station too, but on a different railway: the narrow-gauge line over the Tramuntana, 6 stations, run by a separate operator with its own rules. Treat it as a sightseeing trip. It is not a practical way to get to your hotel from the airport.

The train is useful in the middle of the week. From Inca, the end of the T1/T2/T3 line and 33.5 km from the airport by road, the foot of the nearest climb gaining 300 m or more is 6.7 km away: the Coll de sa Batalla from Caimari, the road to Lluc. If you are staying in Palma and want a day in the Serra without riding 40 km out through the suburbs, put the bike on the train and start from there.

Know before you ride

Belt 17, and the walk to the rank

Bikes are special baggage at this airport and they do not come to the ordinary carousel. The airport information site palmaairport.info says so — “At Palma Airport you will usually find special baggage on reclaim belt 17.” — and sets the threshold at “Any items larger than 1.2 m or weighing more than 50 kg are considered special baggage.”. Belt 17 is at the far end of the hall, a long walk with two boxes and a trolley, so the first fifteen minutes after you land take longer than you expect.

Four boxes, first come, first served

The regulation leaves it to the driver and gives no number. A guide for cyclists does: Ride Harder, 2026-05-04, reports that “Only 4 bike boxes are allowed per bus, and the queue isn't always well organised — it's first come, first served”. That figure is not in the gazette, so it is not an official rule. It fits the driver’s discretion under 5.5 b, so expect it at the stop, but you cannot insist on it as a rule.

Storing the bike box for the week

Two boxes in a hotel room is a real problem, and hotels vary widely in whether they will store them. Ask before you book. If the answer is no, the boxes can stay at the airport instead of in the room: left-luggage near the terminal is priced per item per day and is the cheapest fix. Otherwise the boxes take up the space where your clothes would go.

Getting back for the flight home

Everything above applies in reverse, with one difference: when you arrive you have all day, and when you leave you have a check-in time. A transfer booked around your departure time costs the same as one booked around your arrival, and on this leg a missed bus can cost you the flight.

Riding from the airport to the hotel

Some riders build the bike at the airport and ride to the hotel. That works for the near towns (s'Arenal de Llucmajor is 8.7 km by road) and not for the far ones; the table above shows which is which. The limit is the luggage, which still has to reach the hotel somehow.

There is one account from riders here, and two regulations. The regulations are what you can hold somebody to; the account is what to expect at the stop. Ride Harder (2026-05-04) puts a number on the bus limit that the gazette leaves to the driver, and it names the same baggage belt as a separate airport information site.

Booking a transfer, a car or a hire bike

Book a door-to-door transfer. It is the only option here that does not depend on a driver’s decision, the bus season, or a railway that ends on the plain. Book an airport transfer with the bikes declared and give the number of boxes when you book rather than at the kerb. The distances are in the table above: 64.0 km to Port de Pollença, 59.0 km to Port d'Alcúdia, 30.5 km to Sóller.

Hire a car if you want to start rides away from the hotel, for example the Serra from the north one day and the east coast the next. A car also makes the towns up to 77.1 km away affordable, where a transfer there is expensive. Compare hire cars at the terminal and check the boot dimensions against a bike box before you choose the small one.
