The café stops of Mallorca: thirteen guides, one of them copied, and nothing named on Sa Calobra

Plan the coffee around the climb, not the climb around the coffee — because on more than half of Mallorca’s big passes, the guide you are reading does not name a stop at all.

That is not a complaint about the guides so much as a description of them. Here is what 13 of them, read end to end this week, actually contain: 37 named places, of which 22 rest on a single voice, and a distribution so thin at the top that only 6 places are named by four or more people who are not each other. The phrase doing the work in that sentence is who are not each other, and it is why this page exists.

Two of these guides are the same guide

Epic Road Rides published a list of 15 café stops. Ultimate Bike Hire published the same 15 places — not similar, the same set, all of them — and put them in almost the same order: rank agreement 90.5% against 50% for two people who each made their own mind up, which is 4.2 standard deviations from chance — 15 places can be arranged 1.3 trillion ways, and these two chose within one swap of each other.

So this page counts them once. It costs the corpus a voice and it costs 6 places their corroboration: places you would read as recommended by two independent people, which are recommended by one person twice — Centric, Formentor lighthouse café, Pro Cycle Hire among them.

Everything else in the corpus is clean. The second-closest pair shares 3 places out of a union of 9 and orders them differently — which is what agreement between two people who both like Sineu is supposed to look like.

One row in that table orders its 4 shared places identically and is still called independent, because four places agreeing is four places: the thresholds exist so that a small coincidence cannot be read as a copy, and they are published rather than tuned after the fact.

What the corpus agrees on

Read with the copy removed, the island’s café writing has a very short head and a very long tail. The head is worth having. The tail is where you should read the byline.

Two things fall out of that table that no list can show you, because a list is organised by café.

The two most-named places on the island are not on a climb. Cycling Planet in Alaró and Sa Mola 13 in Sineu lead the corpus with 6 voices each, and the nearest climb of 300 m or more is 13.6 km and 19.0 km away respectively. That is not a criticism — both sit in the middle of the island where a long flat day passes through, and Sineu is where the Pla routes cross. It is a fact about what the corpus is a guide to, and it is the opposite of what it looks like from the titles.

And the ones that are on a climb are clustered on very few of them. Café Coll de sa Batalla and Sa Ruta Verda are the summit and the foot of the same pass; Ca'n Topa is on the Coll de Sóller. The 6 corroborated stops that sit on a climb at all touch 15 of the island’s 75 measured climb-sides — and only 5 of the 13 that gain 300 m or more.

The seven climbs nobody writes about

Here is the same data turned ninety degrees — by climb rather than by café, which is the direction a rider actually plans in.

6 of 13 have a named stop within 1.5 km of the foot or the summit. Seven do not — and the worst of them is the most photographed road on the island. On Sa Calobra, the nearest café any of these thirteen guides names is 11.4 km away, back up over the Coll dels Reis and along the Ma-2141 to the pass.

Now the column on the right, which is the one that changes what all of that means.

The expectation, written down before measuring, was the opposite: that the market’s map would cluster around Palma and the bay while the riding happened elsewhere. It does not. Across the 27 places we could put on the map, the rank correlation between how many independent people name a place and how far it is from a big climb is -0.3 — mildly negative, meaning the well-known cafés sit slightly closer to the climbing, at 1.9 standard deviations, which is not enough to argue with. The median named place is 3.8 km from a climb of 300 m or more. The aggregate says nothing; the per-climb table says everything.

The picks, and what each one is for

Ranked by nothing except what the corpus agrees on and where the road puts it. Nothing here has been tasted.

If the day is Puig Major or Sa Calobra, the stop is Café Coll de sa Batalla — it resolves to the summit node of the Coll de sa Batalla itself, which is the junction every version of that day passes through. SportActive puts it plainly: “It is the perfect place to stop and refuel as from here you can climb the famous Sa Calobra or Puig Major the most reachable point on the island”. A German rider’s camp diary from 21 April 2016 files it under the island’s crowded stops: «Ähnliches gilt für die berühmte Tankstelle mit Café am Col de Sa Batalla.» — the same goes for the famous filling station with a café at the Coll de sa Batalla. Which tells you both that it has been the stop for a decade, and what it actually is.

If you are climbing to Lluc from Caimari, Sa Ruta Verda is at the bottom, not the top — 144 m from the foot. Epic Road Rides: “The cafe opened in 2015 and now provides fresh juices, cakes and homemade energy bars to an enthusiastic audience of cyclists from across the world.” Take it before the climb, not after: the café at the top is a different café and it is 8.2 km further up the same road.

On the Coll de Sóller, Ca'n Topa is on the climb itself — 28 m from the pass, named by 3 independent publishers, and the only stop in the corpus on either of the two measured sides of that col.

Cycling Planet is the one to plan a whole day around rather than drop into. It is 13.6 km from the nearest big climb, so it is not a refuel — it is a destination in the Raiguer with a workshop attached. DUVA Pollensa explains who runs it: “Owned by former track cycling world champion David Muntaner and his wife Laura”. Epic Road Rides calls it “a real gem of a place that seems to live and breath cycling.”

In Port de Pollença the corpus is unanimous and unhelpful. 4 of the places named sit in that one town, every one of them within

1.7 km

of the Talaia d’Albercutx — Tolo's the best known of them, and SportActive describes it exactly: “The inside of the restaurant is like a shrine to cycling, with memorabilia of the sport’s great moments adorning the walls”. They are good, and they are all in the same square kilometre, and none of them helps once you are over the Femenia.

Know before you ride

One stop is the plan, not two

The only operator in this corpus that says how it actually runs a café stop says it in two sentences: “Generally we have one stop per ride, but we will add an extra stop if the route is extra challenging, or if it is a particularly hot day”, and “In a two week training camp we would expect to take you to 12 different locations for café stops”. That is the honest shape of a riding week — one stop per ride, a dozen places across a fortnight — and it is worth holding against a list of thirty-seven. You will use four of them.

The famous ones are full, and have been for sixteen years

The two first-person German accounts in this corpus are separated by six years and say the same thing. A camp diary from 21 April 2016 on the village of Petra: «Geschätzt bis zu 500 Radler teilen sich die Plätze in den fünf Cafés bei gutem Wetter» — an estimated 500 riders sharing the tables in the five cafés when the weather is good. A rider on the Rennrad-News forum thread, writing in 22 January 2010, had already worked out the fix and it is still the fix: go somewhere else, or go early.

A list can outlive the café on it

La Finca Corner is named by Velo Mallorca as a place to stop. Estilo Palma, writing later, says: “La Finca Corner closed again in early 2026.” Both pages are live. This is the failure mode of the whole genre and it is why every place on this page carries the date of the page that named it — and why the corpus below runs from 22 January 2010 to 3 February 2025, with 4 pages printing no date at all.

Ten of the thirty-seven are not on the map

10 of the places these guides name could not be resolved to exactly one feature on OpenStreetMap and are published here without a distance rather than with a guessed one. They are overwhelmingly the specialty-coffee end of the corpus — the Palma shops — and the reason matters: those places are real, they are simply not mapped under the name a cycling guide uses. Nothing here treats an unresolved place as a place that does not exist.

Nothing here knows whether anywhere is open

No opening hours are published on this page and none were collected. An hours table read in August is wrong in November and nothing on the page would say so, which is worse than saying nothing. The one closure in the corpus is above, because a publisher stated it in a sentence with a date on it. Treat every stop here as a place that exists, not a place that is serving.

What riders say, and who is actually saying it

13 pages read, 12 independent voices after the echo test, 3 of them in German — and only 2 of the thirteen are riders describing their own stops rather than publishers compiling a list. That ratio is the weakness of this corpus and it is not one more listicle would fix.

One page belongs in this survey and is pointed at rather than quoted: Rennrad-News forum,in the survey and worth reading at the source — nothing on it can be checked word for word, so nothing is claimed from it. The Rennrad-News forum thread is the one forum voice above, quoted like every other source: word for word, with a date.

The practical block

If the week is a Tramuntana week, plan the stop with the climb, not the other way round. The table above is the only version of that this island has: three of the six corroborated stops sit on a pass, and the seven bare climbs need you to have looked at a map rather than a list before you left. Stay where the stops are, if that is what the trip is for. Palma has the most named places nearest to it and almost none of them on a climb; Port de Pollença has the Tramuntana at the door. Port de Pollença, Sóller and Inca are the three that put a corroborated stop and a big climb in the same day; the hotels guide has the ones with a bike room.

Carry the water anyway. The stop layer and the water layer are not the same layer, and the climb with the longest dry side on this island is one of the seven with nothing named on it — the water guide measures the taps and the gaps between them.

And if you are hiring, hire something you can leave outside. Every place on this page is a street-side stop with a wall or a rack and nothing more — compare what the operators stock before you commit to a bike you will not want to lose sight of. The hire guide is the survey behind that.

On a rest day, the Palma half of this corpus is the half worth reading — it is nine places in one city, most of them within a short walk of each other, and none of them needs a bike. What else is on that day is a separate question.
