Cycling hotels in Mallorca: compare the bike room first

When you compare cycling hotels, look for a number. Every hotel on this coast promises secure bike storage, so the promise tells you nothing: it is on all 7 of the hotel cycling pages quoted below. What tells them apart is capacity: how many bicycles the bike room holds. 4 of the 7 print one, and divided by the bed count the island’s own register keeps for the same building, those four range from 1.60 bikes per bed down to 0.14. One of them has more hooks than guests. Another has one hook for every seventh guest. If you want the short answer, the hotel to start with for each kind of trip is in which cycling hotel for which rider.

The island’s tourism register adds something hotel lists leave out. Mallorca licenses 1,854 places to sleep and 309,008 beds. Of the ones it puts on a map, 86.5% are more than ten kilometres by road from any of the 13 climbs a cycling week gets built around, and only 2.5% are within two. Most of the island’s beds were built for beach holidays. The riding is somewhere else, and the towns close to both are small, so the good rooms in them are gone by October.

How the hotels are compared

Three tests, each based on something published elsewhere: a hotel’s own page or the island’s register. You can check all three yourself, and none of them favours a commercial partner.

None of the tests covers the beds, the breakfast or whether the mechanic is any good. Those are real questions, and for them you need reviews or the hotel itself.

How we got this A hotel counts as publishing a capacity when its own page gives a number of bicycles or hooks, matched by a published pattern. We keep the hotel’s sentence and check it word for word against the page each time. Bikes per bed divides that count by the bed places the register records for the same establishment. How far each one is from a big climb. Distances are by road to the foot of the nearest climb gaining 300 m or more, counting each direction up a pass as its own climb.

Where Mallorca’s hotel beds are, and how far from the climbs

No hotel page shows you this, and it matters more than the choice of any single hotel.

Widen it from the thirteen big climbs to the whole Serra de Tramuntana, 73 climbs across the entire range including the small ones above Andratx, and the picture is a little kinder but the same shape: 22.0% of mapped beds sit within five kilometres of a Serra climb foot and 35.4% are more than twenty away. Two municipalities, Calvià and Palma, hold 37.0% of every registered bed on the island between them.

How we got this One shortest-path search (Dijkstra) per set of climb feet, starting from every foot in the set at once, over the same rideable road network the base pages use: no motorways, cycleways included, private roads left out. Sóller against Muro: rooms near the mountains, rooms on the bay

Every guide to this island says the same thing about the Sóller valley: small places, book early. The register shows the gap is even wider than that suggests.

Sóller registers more establishments than Muro and less than a quarter of the beds. One hotel in Muro holds 60.0% of everything licensed in the whole municipality of Sóller. The valley at the foot of the Puig Major has a town’s worth of rooms, the bay twenty kilometres away has a city’s worth, and in March the valley is full.

Beds and distance to the climbs, town by town

For each base town, here are the registered places to sleep and beds within two kilometres, and how far it is to the nearest big climb.

The «mostly» column is the register’s own classification, and it tells you what a week there will feel like. A town whose commonest entry is Turisme d’interior — a licensed town house — is a town of ten-bed places with no bike room at all, where the bike sleeps in your room and nobody minds. A town of Hotel apartament is a town of three-hundred-bed blocks with a garage and a mechanic. Neither is better. They are different holidays, and the register tells you which one you are booking before the photographs do.

Know before you book

Not every place in the register has a location. 394 of the 1,854 trading establishments carry no coordinates at all, which leaves 66,097 beds out of every distance above, and 16 more carry coordinates that plot into the Pacific. Every share above is a share of the beds the register does place; the others still count in the totals. One of the four picks is among them, and its row says so.

A licence is not an opening date. 23 establishments are currently filed under the register’s own Baixa temporal — trading suspended without deregistering — and plenty more simply shut for the winter while staying registered. The register answers “is this place legal”, which is worth knowing on an island with a large unlicensed rental trade; it does not answer “is it open in February”. Only the hotel can tell you that.

Two hotel chains publish one cycling page for several hotels. Two of the cycling pages that come up near the top of a search belong to hotel groups, so nothing on them applies to a single registered building.

Their promises may well be good, but they cannot be compared the way the seven above can: “our hotels have a garage” does not say which garage, or how big, or in which of the four buildings you are sleeping. Ask them that by email and you will have the number no page publishes.

Hotel policies change faster than their websites. Every source quoted in this guide agrees on that, and an independent guide that has been revisiting the question for two years puts it like this:

What riders say

Riders mostly discuss hotels on review platforms and the big travel forums, which are not quoted here; read them before you book. What follows comes from write-ups riders publish themselves.

One of them counted the room. A German training-camp report from IVORY PLAYA put the hall at 250 bikes. The hotel’s own page today says 260 — a gap of 10, across eleven years.

A guest who counted the bikes independently, a decade earlier, and came within four per cent of the hotel’s own figure is worth far more than a claim only the seller has made. It is the only independent check on any of the four published capacities, so treat the other three as the hotels’ claims until somebody who slept there says otherwise.

Choosing a town, transfers, guided rides and insurance

Pick the town first, then the building. They are separate decisions, and the hotel tables above only help with the second. The base guide ranks the towns on measured approach distance, and the town table above shows what each of them has in it. Port de Pollença, Sóller, Alcúdia and Valldemossa are the four most worth comparing.

If the bike room is the thing you cannot compromise on, the hire guide is the other half of the same decision: 13 of the 18 hire operators listed there deliver to the door, which means a hotel with a poor garage and a hire bike is a different risk from a hotel with a poor garage and your own frame.

Getting there and back. Most of the towns in that table are an hour or less from the terminal — a fixed-price transfer covers it if the riding starts at the door, and a hire car is what you want if the table just told you your hotel is twenty kilometres from the first climb.

A day with somebody who knows the roads is the cheapest way to learn a new base — guided rides and cycling day trips exist in every town on the list, and one of the four picks runs its own.

Your policy and somebody else’s garage. A bike stolen from a hotel bike room is a claim most standard travel policies handle badly, and the hotel’s liability for it is usually narrower than the word “secure” suggests. A travel policy with a sports extension is how people cover the gap. Read what yours excludes before you hand over the frame, not after.
