Cycling hotels in Mallorca — the island keeps a register, and it says the beds are not where the mountains are

Book the number, not the adjective.

Every hotel on this coast promises secure bike storage, and the promise separates nothing — it is on all 7 of the cycling pages this survey read. What separates them is a capacity: how many bicycles the room actually holds. 4 of the 7 print one, and divided by the bed count the island’s own register keeps for the same building, those four spread from 1.60 bikes per bed down to 0.14. One of them has more hooks than guests. Another has one hook for every seventh.

And then there is the thing the register says that no listicle can. Mallorca licenses 1,854 places to sleep and 309,008 beds. Of the ones it puts on a map, 86.5% are more than ten kilometres by road from any of the 13 climbs a cycling week gets built around, and only 2.5% are within two. The island’s bed stock was built for a beach holiday, because that is what it is for. The riding is somewhere else, and the towns that are in both places at once are small — which is the whole reason the good rooms in them are gone by October.

The rule, stated before the answer

Three tests. Each is a property of something somebody else published — a hotel’s own page, or the island’s register — so you can check all three yourself, and none of them can see a commercial partner.

Nothing here measures the beds, the breakfast or whether the mechanic is any good. Those are real questions and this page cannot answer them; a verdict invented about them would be worth less than no verdict at all.

How we got this A hotel counts as publishing a capacity when a count of bicycles or hooks can be extracted from its own page by a printed pattern; the extraction is stored as the hotel’s own sentence and re-proved a verbatim substring. Bikes per bed divides that count by the bed places the register records for the same establishment. What the rule picks

Four riders, four answers, and the biggest bike room wins only one of them.

Where each of them is, relative to a climb. Guides on this site pin every place they name, and a hotel is pinned by road to the nearest climb-side gaining 300 m or more.

The whole readable field

Sorted by bikes per registered bed, because that is the column with an answer in it. The bed count is not the hotel’s claim — it is the number the island registered the building at.

The dashes are the finding. The 4 hotels that print a capacity average 220 registered beds; the 3 that print none average 604. The big houses are the quiet ones. Read that the way you would read it anywhere else: a number gets published when it flatters.

Where the island’s beds actually are

This is the part no hotel page will tell you, and it decides more than any single hotel does.

Widen it from the thirteen big climbs to the whole Serra de Tramuntana — 73 climb-sides, the entire range, including the small ones above Andratx — and the picture softens without changing shape: 22.0% of mapped beds sit within five kilometres of a Serra climb foot and 35.4% are more than twenty away. Two municipalities, Calvià and Palma, hold 37.0% of every registered bed on the island between them.

The trade, in two municipalities

Every guide to this island says the same thing about the Sóller valley: small places, book early. The register settles it, and by a wider margin than the sentence suggests.

Sóller registers more establishments than Muro and less than a quarter of the beds. One hotel in Muro holds 60.0% of everything licensed in the whole municipality of Sóller. That is the trade the mountain makes you: the valley at the foot of the Puig Major has a town’s worth of rooms and the bay twenty kilometres out has a city’s worth, and in March the first one is full.

Town by town, with the register’s answer instead of the map’s

Every base town on this site used to carry a count of hotels OpenStreetMap happened to have mapped within two kilometres — a floor, and it said so. The same circle, asked of the island’s own register, answers in beds.

The «mostly» column is the register’s own classification, not ours, and it is the column that tells you what a week there will feel like. A town whose commonest entry is Turisme d’interior — a licensed town house — is a town of ten-bed places with no bike room at all, where the bike sleeps in your room and nobody minds. A town of Hotel apartament is a town of three-hundred-bed blocks with a garage and a mechanic. Neither is better. They are different holidays, and the register will tell you which one you have booked before the photographs do.

Know before you book

The register does not put everything on the map, and this page says where it stops. 394 of the 1,854 trading establishments carry no coordinates at all — that is 66,097 beds absent from every distance on this page — and 16 more carry coordinates that plot into the Pacific. Every share above is a share of the beds the register does place, and the places it does not are counted in the totals rather than dropped. One of the four picks is among them; its row says so.

A licence is not an opening date. 23 establishments are currently filed under the register’s own Baixa temporal — trading suspended without deregistering — and plenty more simply shut for the winter while staying registered. The register answers “is this place legal”, which is worth knowing on an island with a large unlicensed rental trade; it does not answer “is it open in February”. Only the hotel does.

The chains publish at group level, and it costs them a column here. Two of the cycling pages a search puts near the top belong to hotel groups rather than hotels, so nothing on them attaches to a single registered building.

Their promises may well be good. They are simply not measurable the way the seven above are, because “our hotels have a garage” does not say which garage, or how big, or in which of the four buildings you are actually sleeping. Ask them that in an email and you have the number no page publishes.

What riders say

The community layer on a hotel question is thin, and it is worth saying why: the places riders discuss hotels — the review platforms and the big travel forums — publish nothing that can be held to this site’s rule that a quotation stays checkable, word for word, against the page it came from. They are yours to read before you book. What this page can do is read the write-ups riders publish themselves.

One of them counted the room. A German training-camp report from IVORY PLAYA put the hall at 250 bikes. The hotel’s own page today says 260 — a gap of 10, across eleven years.

That is the most useful thing either number could have done. A facility claim only the seller has ever made is a different kind of fact from one a guest independently counted and got to within four per cent of, a decade earlier. It is also the only corroboration in this survey, which tells you what to do with the other three capacities: treat them as claims until somebody who slept there says otherwise.

Before you book: five questions

Derived from what the seven pages did not answer, which is the useful direction.

The practical block

Pick the town first, then the building. The two decisions are different and this page only settles the second. The base guide ranks the towns on measured approach distance, and the table above says what each of them actually has in it — Port de Pollença, Sóller, Alcúdia and Valldemossa are the four the numbers argue about most.

If the bike room is the thing you cannot compromise on, the hire guide is the other half of the same decision: ten of the fourteen readable hire operators deliver to the door, which means a hotel with a poor garage and a hire bike is a different risk from a hotel with a poor garage and your own frame.

Getting there and back. Most of the towns in that table are an hour or less from the terminal — a fixed-price transfer covers it if the riding starts at the door, and a hire car is what you want if the table just told you your hotel is twenty kilometres from the first climb.

A day with somebody who knows the roads is the cheapest way to learn a new base — guided rides and cycling day trips exist in every town on the list, and one of the four picks runs its own.

Your policy and somebody else’s garage. A bike stolen from a hotel bike room is a claim most standard travel policies handle badly, and the hotel’s liability for it is usually narrower than the word “secure” suggests. A travel policy with a sports extension is how people cover the gap. Read what yours excludes before you hand over the frame, not after.
